Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP)

Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program is a function of the OSHA Consultation Program intended for small business to receive recognition for their exemplary safety and health initiatives.  In order to become part of SHARP, a small business must do the following:

  • Have an on-site consultation from OSHA and uring this process the OSHA Consultation Officer will determine the hazards based on what is observed and identified at the worksite
  • Employees must be involved in the consultation process
  • Any hazardous conditions that were made known to the employer must be corrected
  • An injury and illness prevention program must be established and implemented
  • The employer must ensure that the company’s Days Away, Restricted or Transferred rate and Total Recordable Case rate are below the national average for the company’s industry
  • Before any new conditions or hazards are introduced to the worksite, the company must notify the state’s on-site consultation office

Once the process has begun, an OSHA Consultation Project Manager will determine if your company deserves SHARP recognition. If your company is deemed SHARP acceptable then the company will receive benefits from OSHA and will have up to 3 years to request SHARP renewal.

Benefits

There are many benefits to an employer for earning SHARP status. The first benefit is given to you by OSHA.  Your company will be exempt from OSHA programmed inspections for up to two years! Other benefits include:

  • Lower workplace injury and illness rates
  • Employee moral increases due to a better working environment
  • Your company is recognized by others as creating a safe and healthy work environment which will set you apart from others
  • Your company will save money on worker compensation
  • Reduce days employees are away from work which keeps your company running smoothly

In order to maintain SHARP compliance with OSHA, your company must implement health and safety programs that assist in the reduction of injury and illness rates. If you decide to renew your SHARP certification you must:

  • Apply for renewal
  • Allow for another visit from OSHA to ensure you are maintaining or improving injury and illness rates
  • Submit an Interim Year SHARP site self-evaluation, which includes reports of your injury and illness rates

Importance and Significance of SHARP

If your company decides to implement the SHARP program, then you are making a commitment to health and safety at your worksite.  Not only is your organization willing to stand out above other companies, but the company is also making a commitment to employees and their safety. Earning SHARP status means going above the OSHA regulations and instituting health and safety programs that show how your company aims to provide the best possible safe working environment for employees.

MW Consulting: What we do…

MW Consulting will help your company achieve SHARP status by working with your organization and the OSHA consultation program.  We will conduct an on-site walk through to determine, in advance, the hazards associated with your workplace.  Once the walk through is completed, MW Consulting will draft health and safety programs to help your company reduce injury and illness rates.  We will help implement these programs throughout your company with the aim of establishing a strong safety culture.

MW Consulting will also advise you how to correct any additional hazards identified by the OSHA Consultation Officer during the on-site walk through and our consultants will assist in abating any identified corrective action items in the most cost-effective manner.  We will work with your company to correct the hazards in a seamless way to ensure no disruption to your company’s day-to-day events.  Contact us today for more information on earning OSHA SHARP status.
